Marathon Training by Joe Henderson

This brand-new (1997) book by Joe Henderson takes you through a 100-day marathon training program in an innovative format. The program has three levels: "Cruisers," who "aim primarily to finish"; "Pacers," who "aim for time goals," such as setting P.R.'s, and "Racers," who "compete with other marathoners." Henderson takes these three groups through a 15-week program. Each week is introduced with a page laying out the goals and program for that week; unlike most programs, Henderson doesn't try to suggest that you do certain workouts on particular days - all he cares is that by the end of the week you have accomplished the key workouts for that week. Then, for each day of the program, Henderson provides a one-page "thought for the day," a one-paragraph "tip for the day," and then a complete page on which to record your training (of course, you can also record your training using The Athlete's Diary software and get even more feedback!). As with his other books, Henderson's advice is sensible and clearly written, and this book, designed as it is to be read literally one page a day, seems destined to take many runners through the marathon experience in a most enjoyable way. ($14.95) Full description available.
