Training and Racing Biathlon
by Mark Sisson
Description
In 1989, back before biathlons became duathlons, Mark Sisson wrote this little gem of a book.
It's out of print now, but we've managed to find a supply. Sisson is a man of few words -
the book is only 95 pages long - but every word is worth listening to. Sisson was the first
to write about the application of serious scientific principles to multisport racing. He starts
by describing methods like the Conconi test for evaluating your fitness. He then discusses
general goal-setting, along with specific goals - establishing an aerobic base, raising VO2
Max, raising Anaerobic Theshold, and increasing lactate tolerance. Individual chapters take
you through each phase of training: base, strength, speed, tapering, and racing. In each phase,
he has you divide your workouts into three types that he calls active rest, break-even, and
breakthrough workouts, and focuses on the use of heart rate to control your workouts. Brief
chapters discuss other subjects - technique, diet, stretching, and rest. An extremely valuable
book for any serious athlete, certainly not limited to duathletes.

Reviews
From the book jacket: "This straightforward manual contains no history, no politics
and no personal anecdotes - just good solid information on how and why training works, why
some workouts are more advantageous than others at particular times, how to avoid over or
under-training and ultimately how to design your own ideal training program aimed at achieving
peak performance."
