HOT OFF THE PRESS
-----------------
Two books are hot off the press this month, one brand new, and one an
updated version of a classic. Both are worthwhile additions to a
runner's bookshelf:
HEALTHY RUNNER'S HANDBOOK is a brand new title by Dr. Lyle J. Micheli
(with Mark Jenkins). Micheli, a clinical sports physician since 1973,
is the director of the Division of Sports Medicine at the prestigious
Children's Hospital in Boston, a past president of the American College
of Sports Medicine, and the author of numerous books and articles on
sports medicine. The book is very easy to read - well written and
nicely designed. The core of the book is its detailed discussion of 31
injuries and conditions - stress fractures, ITB, plantar fasciitis,
etc., etc. For each injury, the book lays out the symptoms, the special
concerns, tells you what you can do and what a doctor can do to treat
the ailment, discusses rehabilitation, and lets you know the expected
recovery time.
Details: 255 pages long, paperback, $16.95

o Diagnosis and Management of Running Injuries

In 1978, Bob Glover and Jack Shepherd teamed up to write THE RUNNER'S
HANDBOOK, which quickly became THE classic guide for beginning and
intermediate runners. Out of print for some time, this book has now
been completely rewritten, and should begin to compete with Galloway as
the best-selling running book. Senior author Glover has directed the
running classes for the New York Road Runner's Club since 1978, so he
brings a wealth of experience to the book. The book is dense (726 pages
of relatively small print) and packed with information. Whether it's
tips on beginning running, marathon training, motivation, the latest
running apparel, pregnancy and running, or how to live a healthy
lifestyle, this book covers it all.
