BEYOND THE MARATHON: THE GRAND SLAM OF TRAIL ULTRARUNNING by Bob Boeder

A small number of people run 100-mile races. An even smaller number
take on the challenge of competing a grand slam - four 100-mile races
of increasing difficulty, all in a single summer. In 1994, Bob Boeder
became one of them, as he finished Old Dominion, Western States,
Leadville, and Wasatch Front. In Beyond the Marathon, Boeder describes
the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual challenges he met. Eric
Clifton, 1992 Ultrarunner of the Year, calls it "A well-written, quick
moving adventure tale which combines both the romance and the gritty
realism of ultrarunning; filled with practical knowledge for anyone
attempting a trail 100 and excellent for non-runners seeking a glimpse
of the ultra world." ($10.95, 135 pp)

THE OTHER KINGDOM by Victor Price

First published in 1964, this cult novel has been long out of print,
but now it's back. Colin Warnock is an Irish college student on a quest
for the elusive sub-4-minute mile. On the one hand, the novel is about
what makes people strive for excellence, and what it means to excel in
sport in particular. At the same time, it's filled with scores of
training details which runners will not only identify with, but may
even learn something from. The Sunday Times (London) wrote, "The book's
great strength lies in the fascinating exposure of the mysteries of an
athlete's training. The race scenes are genuinely uplifting." Any
runner, not just track runners, will enjoy this book. ($14.95, 220 pp)

NEW IN THE BOOKSTORE
--------------------

In addition to newly published titles, we continue to add older titles
to our stock at The Athlete's Bookstore. Some capsule summaries of a
few of the books we've added recently:

TRAINING AND RACING BIATHLONS by Mark Sisson

In 1989, back before biathlons became duathlons, Mark Sisson wrote this
little gem of a book. It's out of print now, but we've managed to find a
supply. Sisson is a man of few words - the book is only 95 pages long -
but every word is worth listening to. Sisson, a 2:16 marathoner, 4th
place Hawaii Ironman finisher, and one-time head of Tri-Fed, was the
first to write about the application of serious scientific principles
to multisport racing. He starts by evaluating your fitness by
estimating VO2 Max, and describes the use of the perceived effort
scale, the submaximal test for aerobic efficiency, and the Conconi test
for anaerobic threshhold. He then discusses general goal-setting, along
with specific goals - establishing an aerobic base, raising VO2 Max,
raising Anaerobic Theshhold, and increasing lactate tolerance.
Individual chapters take you through each phase of training: base,
strength, speed, tapering, and racing. In each phase, he has you divide
your workouts into three types that he calls active rest, break-even,
and breakthrough workouts, and focuses on the use of heart rate to
control your workouts. Brief chapters discuss other subjects -
technique, diet, stretching, and rest. An extremely valuable book for
any serious athlete, certainly not limited to duathletes. ($8.95, 95 pp)

RUNNERS AND WALKERS: KEEPING PACE WITH THE WORLD'S BEST by Steven Boga

What better way to get inspired than to read about inspirational
people? In this book, Boga profiles eight famous and not-so-famous
people in the context of one of their key activities. Join:

o Frank Shorter as he cruises to an Olympic marathon victory
o Legendary ultrarunner Ann Trason as she wins the Western States 100
o David Horton during his record-breaking solo run of the 2,144 mile
     Appalachian Trail
o Masters racewalker Viisha Sedlak as she powers through a 10K
o Tom Crawford as he races 300 miles from Badwater, Death Valley to
the top of Mt. Whitney - and back
o All-time great masters runner Ruth Anderson as she completes
     Western States at age 56
o Steven Newman as he literally walks around the world over a period
     of four years
o Joan Benoit as she wins the first women's Olympic marathon

Boga supplements these profiles with short but useful chapters on
running tips, health and safety, the history of running, "oddities,"
and quotations, along with a glossary of running terms, a list of
running organizations, and a bibliography. ($14.95, 243 pp).

RUNNING THE TRANS AMERICA FOOTRACE by Barry Lewis

In the summer of 1992, 28 athletes gathered in Huntington Beach,
California to begin the Runner's World Trans America Footrace. 63 days
later, thirteen of them made it to New York City, 2836 miles away. This
book, subtitled "Trials and Triumphs of Life on the Road," is the
inspiring story of their journey. ($14.95, 155 pp)

THE YELLOW JERSEY by Ralph Hurne

The classic novel about a washed-up cyclist who finds his last Tour de
France turning into the chance of a lifetime. Bicycling Magazine called
it "The greatest cycling novel every written." The New York Times
described it as "Sports fiction at its very best." ($14.95, 285 pp)
