HOLIDAY NOTES
-------------

Hanukkah is history, but if you give Christmas presents you still have
a little time left for last minute gifts. If you order books from us,
our normal (free) shipping is via book rate, and you'll be pushing your
luck to see it in time for Christmas. For a small fee, priority mail
shipping is available for books and software, and will get your package
to you in 2-3 days. We make a special effort at this time of year to
ship all orders the day they come in, to try to get you your order in
time. But time is running out!

Last month's Booknotes carried a complete list of our gift
recommendations, so we won't repeat them here, but if you threw out
your copy (shame on you!), you can find the list at:

HOT OFF THE PRESS
-----------------

CYCLIST'S TRAINING BIBLE by Joe Friel

We mentioned this book last month but didn't even have it in the store
at the time; now we do. It's been selling like hotcakes. This is a
complete manual for the self-coached cyclist, concentrating (in ways
similar to Sleamaker and Browning's SERIOUS Training for Endurance
Athlete) on laying out a training program taking into account varying
intensities of training, periodization, and similar concepts. A nice
complement to Eddie B's Bicycle Road Racing, which has much more on
racing tactics and strategies but much less on training. ($19.95, 266 pp)

TRAINING BOOK OF THE YEAR
-------------------------

Our vote for best new training book of 1996 goes to Joe Henderson's
Better Runs. Subtitled "25 Years' Worth of Lessons for Running Faster
and Farther," Henderson offers sound advice over a wide range of topics
in a well-written manner; hard to ask for anything more. Individual
chapters, all titled "Better ...", address the following topics: goals,
choices, workouts, walks, rests, schedules, results, paces, distances,
courses, seasons, speeds, tests, extras, tactics, races, rewards,
shoes, products, diets, cures, coaches, friends, thoughts, and years.
Unlike many training books, which are really more suitable as reference
books, this is one you'll enjoy reading cover to cover, and because of
the way the book is broken into topics and sub-topics, it's the kind of
book you can easily pick up each night and read a chapter or two.
Henderson is the West Coast editor and featured columnist of Runner's
World magazine (he started with Runner's World in 1967!) and the author
of more than a dozen books on running.
