THE ATHLETE'S CALCULATOR FOR PILOT from Stevens Creek Software ($14.95)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Pilot, also known as the PalmPilot, is a shirt-pocket-sized
electronic organizer from U.S. Robotics, with address book, calendar,
to-do list, etc. If you have one, there's some brand-new software for
it from Stevens Creek Software that should interest you - The Athlete's
Calculator (tm) for Pilot. The Athlete's Calculator adds a
special-purpose calculator to the general-purpose one that comes with
the Pilot. Here's what it will do:
o Calculate pace given time and distance so you'll have feedback after
each workout.
o Calculate distance given time and pace - a great way to estimate
distances on new, unmeasured routes .
o Calculate time given distance and pace - perfect for estimating your
finishing time in an upcoming race .
o Calculate individual and cumulative paces (or times and distances)
for splits of interval workouts or any workout with different legs
or segments of the same or different distances. Estimate your
finishing time for a marathon using different paces for the first
20 and last 6.2 miles, and see the total time automatically
calculated.
o Allows input and calculates output in a wide variety of units -
miles, kilometers, yards, and meters for distance, and minutes per
mile, minutes per kilometer, minutes per hundred yards, minutes per
hundred meters, miles per hour, and kilometers per hour for pace.
o Performs simple conversion from any units to any other units for
distance and pace. If you have a swim workout specified in pace/100
meters, and your pool is measured in yards, just convert! If you do
intervals on a 400-meter track, calculate your pace in minutes/mile.
o Includes a "mini-calculator" which allows you to add or subtract
times and paces (as well as distances). You can also multiply and
divide, so if your coach tells you to do a workout 30% slower than
your 10K pace, you 'll be able to calculate what that pace is.
You can get more information about the software, including reading the
complete online manual, downloading a trial copy, and placing an order

BETTER TRAINING FOR DISTANCE RUNNERS by David Martin and Peter Coe
------------------------------------------------------------------
($22.95, paperback)
BETTER TRAINING FOR DISTANCE RUNNERS is one of the two books (the other
is Noakes' LORE OF RUNNING) which we list in our catalog as "hard-core."
First published in 1991 as "Training Distance Runners", the book has now
(1997) been revised, including new chapters on physiology and
bioenergetics, and discussions of "new" topics like training with a
heart rate monitor, hyperhydrating with glycerin, and more. The book is
filled with the science of running, explained with formulas, graphs, and
literature references, but also explained in clearly written English.
Think of this as a textbook of running and you'll understand what it
is. In their preface to the second edition, the authors have this to
say, which accurately sums up their target audience:
"The book has indeed been well received by elite-level athletes and
their coaches around the world. But the book has also been discovered
by a larger population of dedicated runners not quite elite in terms of
genetic gifts, but whose interest in learning the technical aspects of
human athletic performance is still extremely keen."

TRAINING FOR YOUNG DISTANCE RUNNERS by Larry Greene and Russ Pate
-----------------------------------------------------------------
($18.95, paperback)
A comprehensive, science-based training manual written especially for
young (age 12-18) distance runners in both cross-country and track. In
addition to discussions of nutrition, physiology, biomechanics, and
training methods, the book includes sample workouts and training
programs, 31 strength and flexibility exercises, and career profiles
and training advice from nine elite runners.
The book's Preface says, "Training for Young Distance Runners" seeks to
provide runners 12 to 18, their coaches and parents, sports scientists,
and sports medicine professionals with the information, technique, and
programs that will produce the best possible outcomes for young
competitive runners." That's a broad scope, and in our view the book is
least appropriate for the runners themselves. The book is clearly
written, but in our view only fairly advanced high school students are
likely to benefit from its textbook-like style. For coaches and parents
who are playing an active role in their child's running, though, the
book should prove quite valuable.

NEW IN THE BOOKSTORE
--------------------
During the last month we've stocked George Sheehan's last book, GOING
THE DISTANCE, which was published last year. Every athlete gets old and
dies. GOING THE DISTANCE is the chronicle of the last seven years in the
life of the "philosopher king" of running, George Sheehan, after he was
diagnosed with inoperable cancer. This is a book about dying, not about
running, but it IS a book about a runner, trying to cope with the end of
life while trying to maintain his identity as an athlete. ($21.95,
hardcover)
A review of GOING THE DISTANCE can be found at the Road Runners Club of
America (RRCA) web site: http://www.rrca.org/publicat/books96.html.
Joe Henderson's DID I WIN ($12.95, paperback) is another excellent book
about Sheehan, featuring not only the writing of Henderson, but also 20
essays on Sheehan by people ranging from Jim Fixx to Bill Clinton.
