RUNNER'S WORLD COMPLETE BOOK OF RUNNING, ed. by Amby Burfoot
($24.95, hard cover)
------------------------------------------------------------
Amby Burfoot, executive editor of Runner's World Magazine, has put
together a wonderful book for the beginning runner or anyone who is
getting serious about their running. Think of it as the "best of
Runner's World," a compilation of the best articles that have
appeared in the last ten years, combined with some new material.
The chapters have the kind of titles that many readers of Runner's
World find annoying ("10 Laws of Health Running", "Seven Strategies
to be your Best") but the advice is first-rate, coming from some of
the most experienced writers and coaches in the business. The book
is also attractively bound and typeset in an easy-to-read format,
making it more likely that you'll read it cover to cover. Authors
of chapters include such well-known Runner's World writers as Hal
Higdon, Joe Henderson, Jeff Galloway, and Liz Applegate.

contents, can be found at:

HOW TO TRAIN, by Hal Higdon ($16.95, paperback)
-----------------------------------------------
Training schedules. You want 'em. Higdon's got 'em. If you're one
of those runners who wants to be told what to do on a day by day
basis, this is the book for you, whether you're training for a 5K
or a 100K. Veteran writer Hal Higdon has put together the
definitive book in this genre by collecting schedules for every
conceivable situation and race length from 25 different coaches.
Schedules cover distances from 5K to ultramarathons, and special
situations like rehab, water-training, fitness walking,
racewalking, children, and lots more. Would you believe a marathon
schedule that's 84 weeks long? Higdon's got it, and more.

TALES FROM THE TOOLBOX, by Scott Parr ($14.95, paperback)
---------------------------------------------------------
Scott Parr was a mechanic for the Coors Light and Motorola Cycling
Teams, travelling through Europe with Lance Armstrong, Phil
Anderson, Frankie Andreu, and the rest. This is a great little book
to give you the view from the "other side" of great races like the
Tour de France. It's also got some interesting insights on bike
design and wheel building, and a section called "The Pro Bike Wash"
which tells you how the mechanics wash and inspect the pros bikes.
IN FITNESS AND IN HEALTH, by Phil Maffetone ($16.95, paperback)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Phil Maffetone is a well-known triathlon coach who has been
associated with triathlon greats Mark Allen and Mike Pigg, among
others. In the public mind he is associated with the "go easier to
get faster" philosophy expounded in his TRAINING FOR ENDURANCE, and
also with the 40-30-30 diet. This brand-new edition of IN FITNESS
AND IN HEALTH lays out Maffetone's theories on training, diet, and
health in detail.
Maffetone remains controversial (he still refuses to acknowledge the
value of measuring your maximum heart rate, for example, relying
instead on his unscientific "180-Formula", and alone among experts
recommends training at an identical heart rate for different sports)
but he has a lot to say and is certainly thought-provoking. You'll
find a chapter entitled "Fats are Good for You!", but you'll also be
surprised to find a section entitled "The 40-30-30 Myth," in which he
points out the weaknesses (fallacies?) of the 40-30-30 diet. Worth
reading, but the reader is cautioned against believing that
everything presented in this book as "science" is actually so.

SMART HEART, by Sally Edwards ($24.95, paperback)
-------------------------------------------------
This is Sally Edwards' third book about training with a heart rate
monitor, and by far her most comprehensive. Some coaches believe in
limited uses for HRMs (e.g., making sure you go easy on your easy
days). Edwards is the "total HRM coach" - she believes every aspect
of your training and racing should be designed around the HRM. And
she practices what she preaches as a competitive athlete herself
(winner of many Ironman triathlons, among many other races). Starting
with the concepts she laid out in HEART ZONE TRAINING, she expands on
them in ways more suited to competitive athletes. The subtitle of the
book - High Performance Heart Zone Training - explains her intent
clearly.
Edwards doesn't provide complete training programs for any
particular sport, but instead concentrates on teaching you how to
put together all the elements of a training program yourself by
apportioning your training between the different "heart rate
training zones." Many of the workouts in the book are described
only in heart rate terms, with no reference to sport whatsoever
(e.g., number of minutes in a particular training zone).
The book could use an Index, but is otherwise attractively laid out
and easy to read.

contents, can be found at:

TOTAL RUNNER'S LOG, by Sharon Svensson ($7.95, paperback)
---------------------------------------------------------
You all probably realize that we believe the best logs are kept in
computers, using THE ATHLETE'S DIARY software. You put no more in,
and you get a lot more out. We do sell a few written logs for those
who think otherwise, however. The TOTAL RUNNER'S LOG, brand-new this
year, is the "low-end" model by the publisher of TOTAL RUNNER'S
ALMANAC and TOTAL TRIATHLON ALMANAC. A simple but attractive
spiral-bound log to keep the basic information for runners, it also
contains two dozen pages of advice on nutrition, training, strength
training, and training with a heart rate monitor.
WIND, WAVES, AND SUNBURN, by Conrad Wennerberg ($16.95, paperback)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Marathon swimming is a world all to its own. Ultrarunners can spend
24 hours doing a race, but they aren't immersed in cold water, and
they can even sit down at an aid station if they want to. Marathon
swimmers have no such luxury. Marathon swimmers also have to deal
with isolation and loneliness in ways that other athletes can't
comprehend.
WIND, WAVES, AND SUNBURN chronicles the sport, from Matthew Webb's
first successful swim across the English Channel in 1875 to the
modern era (unfortunately not including Susie Maroney's historic
swim from Cuba to the Florida Keys, which occured shortly after the
book was reprinted). Lots of pictures and maps help you get a better
picture of what these athletes are up against. Any athlete
interested in the limits of human endurance will find the book
fascinating, even if you aren't part of this strange subculture
where adding body fat is a good thing.

that they are electronic, which means that Bruce in Sydney,
Australia can buy one for his cousin Nigel in Liverpool, England
and have it delivered the same day! (Well, maybe it won't be the
same day, Sydney and Liverpool aren't even on the same day, are
they?) Of course you can also mail or hand-deliver the gift
certificate if the recipient doesn't have email.
