HOT OFF THE PRESSES
-------------------
THE MEN'S HEALTH GUIDE TO PEAK CONDITIONING ($29.95, paperback)
---------------------------------------------------------------
This is a really impressive book - well-written, clearly
laid out and designed, dozens of photographs, and a
thorough coverage of every aspect of exercise known to man.
We say "man" because this book is ostensibly written for
men, although probably 90% of it is relevant to women as
well.
One of the best aspects of the book is that it lays out
exercise programs for every situation imaginable. Whatever
your motivation (lose weight, getting "ripped", etc.),
lifestyle (travel, family, etc.), age, recreational
interests (golf, tennis, basketball, etc.), this book shows
you the exercises that are best for you. It even covers
subjects like the proper way to shovel snow and the proper
way to split a log with an ax! When we say comprehensive,
we mean comprehensive!
The book is a bit expensive, at $29.95, but in our opinion
is well worth the price. Heck, most people would pay that
much just for the advice on page 169 - exercises to improve
your sexual performance. :-)

table of contents, can be found at:

THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO RACEWALKING TECHNIQUE AND TRAINING,
by Dave McGovern ($17.95, paperback)
--------------------------------------------------------
We've been waiting for the definitive book on racewalking
and this would appear to be it. Dave McGovern is a member
of the U.S. National Racewalk Team, a USATF certified
coach, a 12-time national champion at distances from 10 to
40 kilometers, and has written extensively for Walking
magazine. In this book, McGovern gives us a complete and
up-to-date source of information on all aspects of
racewalking, including technique, training, psychology,
stretching, strength training, competition, and more.
Here's what the Charman of the USATF Racewalk Committee
says: "[This] is a comprehensive training manual for those
involved in competitive racewalking. It services both the
novice athlete and the veteran, providing tips gleaned from
many years of intense training and contact with some of the
best coaches, physiologists and psychologists in the event
today. If you are serious about racewalking, this book
belongs on your shelf." We agree. Frankly, 90% of this book
would benefit runners and other athletes as well. Highly
recommended.

OFF-SEASON TRAINING FOR CYCLISTS, by Edmund Burke
($14.95, paperback)
CYCLING HEALTH AND PHYSIOLOGY, by Edmund Burke
($17.95, paperback)
-------------------------------------------------
Ed Burke is an exercise physiologist who has written or
edited ten books on cycling, and is renowned for
translating the latest scientific research into practical
applications for cyclists. Some of Burke's other books,
like HIGH-TECH CYCLING and SERIOUS CYCLING, are best suited
to the advanced rider. By contrast, these two new books
(from different publishers) both use large, easy-to-read
type and are aimed at a larger audience of cyclists.
OFF-SEASON TRAINING FOR CYCLISTS includes chapters on
Strength Training for Cyclists, Strength Training Exercises
(including plyometrics), Developing a Powerful Torso, Indoor
Cardiovascular Conditioning (including rowing,
stair-stepping, and cross-country ski machines), Spinning,
Cross-Training and Outdoor Activities, and Stretching.
CYCLING HEALTH AND PHYSIOLOGY, subtitled "Using sports
science to improve your riding and racing," is a simple,
easy-to-read guide to health and physiology for the
cyclist. Half the book is devoted to "training topics,"
like determining your training needs, overtraining, fine
tuning, etc, while the other half is about nutrition,
keeping healthy, treating illness, and treating injuries.
GO EAST, OLD MAN, by Paul Reese ($14.95, paperback)
---------------------------------------------------
At age 73, Paul Reese ran across the country in 124 days -
a marathon a day. His book about that adventure, TEN
MILLION STEPS, went out of print last year and is no longer
available. The sequel to that adventure and that book is GO
EAST, OLD MAN. With the able assistance of Joe Henderson as
his editor, Reese uses his new book to describe his
adventures between ages 75 and 79, running across all 22 of
the Western states. Reese's day-by-day accounts can at times
be mundane, but he still serves as in inspiration to us all.
NEW IN THE BOOKSTORE
---------------------
We've added a few more titles to the bookstore recently:
THE CROSS-COUNTRY PRIMER, by Laurie Gullion
($15.95, paperback)
RUNNER'S GUIDE TO CROSS COUNTRY SKIING, by Dick Mansfield
($10.95, paperback)
---------------------------------------------------------
Now even the Kenyans are doing it! Unfortunately for you,
Nike probably isn't paying your way to a Scandinavian ski
school, so if you want to learn cross-country skiing, you
might start with a good book. THE CROSS-COUNTRY PRIMER is
an illustrated guide to the essentials of cross-country
skiing, with special emphasis on techniques for classical,
freestyle, and downhill cross-country skiing. Particularly
valuable are the dozens of drills intended to help you
perfect each form of skiing by emphasizing different
aspects of the technique. RUNNER'S GUIDE TO CROSS COUNTRY
SKIING covers training, technique, equipment, waxing, etc.,
and also the "end-product," with chapters on racing,
touring, masters racing, and skiing 50K. The sections on
technique lack illustrations and are not as extensive as
the ones in THE CROSS-COUNTRY PRIMER, but the descriptions
are easy to follow.
ADVANCED RACE WALKING, by Martin Rudow ($11.50, paperback)
------------------------------------------------------------
Subtitled THE SERIOUS RACE WALKER'S GUIDE TO COMPETITIVE
SUCCESS, this book is written by the former head coach of the
U.S. men's race walking team. Chapters cover technique, speed,
endurance, flexibility, and other topics. The training
schedules are detailed and extensive, covering periods as
long as three years. Unfortunately only limited quantities of
this book remain, and it will soon be out of print.
MASSAGE FOR CYCLISTS, by Roger Pozeznik ($14.95, paperback)
------------------------------------------------------------
This book uses large type, simple instructions, and lots of
large, clear photographs to illustrate the techniques. Both
self-massage and massage of others is covered.
FIT & PREGNANT, by Joan Marie Butler ($15.95, paperback)
------------------------------------------------------------
Exercises including stretching, aerobics, weight training,
running and walking, swimming and other water activities,
and cycling are covered in this book, as is nutrition and
safety. FIT & PREGNANT is intended both for women in
general who are pregnant and want to stay fit, and also for
athletes who are looking for advice on how to modify their
normal fitness routine during pregnancy.
DISCONTINUED
------------
PERSONAL BEST, one of George Sheehan's classics, has been
discontinued by Rodale Press. We still have some stock
left, as do they, but sometime in the near future we expect
it to become unavailable, so if you've been thinking about
getting a copy of this book, now is the time.
AND THEN THE VULTURE EATS YOU, John L. Parker's collection
of essays on ultrarunning, is temporarily out of print, but
is expected back in print later this year. The same is true
for CYCLO-CROSS, the definitive (and possibly only!) book
on this unique sport.
SUBMIT A REVIEW OR JUST A RATING
--------------------------------
We promised to set this up a long time ago but finally did
it - a site where you can give us your two cents for free,
and help other visitors to The Athlete's Bookstore make
intelligent decisions about what books to buy. You can
simply rate a book on a 1-10 scale, write a pithy comment
("Two thumbs up!"), or write as long a review as you like.
We will not edit your comments for opinions (if you think a
book was a complete waste of money, feel free to say so),
but we do reserve the right to edit for language, length,
or any other reason we think appropriate. These reviews
will be put up on our web site, and they will include your
name - anonymous reviews are in our opinion not worth the
electrons they use up. Of course if you just rate a book
this doesn't apply.
