| Smart Heart High Performance Heart Zone Training by Sally Edwards DescriptionThis is Sally Edwards' third book about training with a heart rate monitor. It's by far her most comprehensive, and the most suited to serious athletes trying to learn how to train using an HRM. Some coaches believe in limited uses for HRMs (e.g., making sure you go easy on your easy days). Edwards is the "total HRM coach" - she believes every aspect of your training and racing should be designed around the HRM. And she practices what she preaches as a competitive athlete herself. Edwards doesn't provide complete training programs for any particular sport, but instead concentrates on teaching you how to put together all the elements of a training program yourself. Like many other authors (starting with Mark Sisson's Training and Racing Biathlons and including Sleamaker and Browning's Serious Training for Endurance Athletes, Marc Evans' Endurance Athletes Edge, Rick Niles' Time-Saving Training for Multisport Athletes, and many others), the key to Edwards' system is apportioning your training between the different "heart rate training zones." Many of the workouts in the book are described only in heart rate terms, with no reference to sport whatsoever (e.g., number of minutes in a particular training zone). One warning for triathletes especially. At a couple points in the book Edwards refers to "Sport specific Max HR," and it is pretty obvious she believes in using different MaxHR numbers for the different sports. But at other places in the book, the topic is totally ignored, and you could easily get the impression she thinks there is only one MaxHR that you should use for all workouts. That isn't what she thinks, but it's a bit confusing. The lack of an Index in the book doesn't help this confusion. About the AuthorSally Edwards is an accomplished athlete - she has been a top competitor at the Ironman Triathlon (holding the masters record for many years), the Western States 100, the Iditashoe and many other endurance events. She was a founder and the first vice-president of TriFed/USA (now USAT), a trustee of the Women's Sports Foundation, and the national spokesperson for the Danskin Women's Triathlon Series, among her many involvements in sport. She lives and breaths heart rate monitor training, which is the basis for her company, Heart Zones. Book Details
