Count Circle

Do you participate in Christmas Bird Counts
or Breeding Bird Counts? Have a local "Patch Challenge" coming up?

Count Circle is the tool you need!

iPhone • iPad • iPod Touch • Android

If you're involved with Christmas or Breeding Bird Counts, the boundaries of your count circle are always of interest, and sometimes unclear. Count Circle includes the complete National Audubon database of CBCs (updated as of December 2018), with a total of 2883 different count circles in 93 different states and territories including Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, and Antarctica. Lookup and display any count circle on an interactive map, and find out exactly what is (and is not) included in the circle.

Count Circle also displays your current location, so you can determine precisely if you are inside or outside the count circle as you are doing your count.

You can also use Count Circle just to view the different circles, to help you decide which ones you might like to participate in. Display all the circles in your state with a single click.

If you have reason to believe the database is in error, or if you are a count organizer and want to experiment with repositioning the circle for better coverage of key areas, Count Circle lets you set the center of the circle, then update the database, and even, if you choose to do so, report the revision directly to National Audubon.

You can also create and save your own circles, and, combined with the ability to display multiple existing circles, this provides the perfect way to position a potential new circle so that it doesn't overlap existing circles. You can even choose the radius (in miles or kilometers) if you want to use something other than the "standard" 7.5 mile radius used for the CBC. A great addition for "patch challenges"!

Note: requires Android 3.0 or higher

Select the region...

Then select the count...

And instantly the count circle is displayed, in a simple map format...

... or in a satellite view

As you are counting your area, real-time GPS shows whether you are (or are not) still inside the circle

Set the center of the circle yourself if the database is in error, or if you want to experiment with a new circle

And it works on iPad (and iPod Touch) as well as on iPhone and Android devices,
and in both portrait and landscape orientations

If you're experimenting with proposing a new circle for the CBC, you need to know that it doesn't overlap with existing circles. Count Circle lets you display multiple circles on the screen at once, so you can display the existing circles in the area, then experiment with moving a new circle so that it's positioned properly, without overlap.

With one click you can display all the count circles in your state, then explore to see what count areas might interest you. Why limit yourself to one count when you can do three or four?
