Complete Configuration for your PalmOS Handheld Scanner
including the Symbol SPT15xx, SPT17xx, SPT18xx, CSM150, and the PSC Momentum

There are a number of barcode-enabled PalmOS handheld devices on the market, mostly from Symbol Technologies. These scanners have dozens and dozens of built-in features—which types of barcodes are scanned (and which aren't), whether or not check digits are scanned, how many seconds the scanner tries before giving up, whether the scan beam is wide or narrow, whether an "aiming beam" is activated before the actual scanning beam, and so on. Unfortunately, none of these parameters are accessible to the end-user of the devices. Programmers can access all of them, and may chose in individual programs to allow end-users to control one or more of these parameters, or may simply "hardcode" some particular set of parameters into the software.

ScanConfig changes this situation. ScanConfig is a new "Preference" (like the preferences which allow you to set formats, date and time, etc. on the Palm) which allows the end-user access to ALL of the features of the scanner, so that the scanner can be configured EXACTLY as the particular application (and the user) require (as a point of reference, the standard Symbol "Diag" program allows you access to a FEW of these parameters, and doesn't save your settings at all, so it really has little or no value other than for quick tests). Of course you can also activate the scanner from within ScanConfig to test the settings you select.

Features and Benefits:

Complete access to all features of the scanner Configure the scanner the way YOU want it, not the way some programmer thinks you want it or the way the Symbol defaults force you to have it.
Accessed as a standard "Preference" panel Allows one application (ScanConfig) to be used to control the scanner configuration for all scan-enabled applications.
Up to 16 different named configurations Switch easily between a configuration appropriate for, e.g., a POS application, and the configuration appropriate for an inventory application.
Accessible from other applications Applications which are "ScanConfig-aware" can run ScanConfig when they start up to automatically select the scanner configuration corresponding to that application; they can also transfer the user to ScanConfig to allow the user to set up a specific configuration for that application. "ScanConfig-aware" applications from Stevens Creek Software include Take An Order!, On Hand, CatScan, and HandyLabel.
Password protection Allows one person to set up the appropriate configuration and then hand the handheld unit to someone else without fear of having the configuration accidentally (or intentionally) changed.
Automatic configuration on bootup If the handheld unit is ever reset, ScanConfig can be configured to run automatically to put the handheld into your desired configuration rather than the factory default settings.
Configuration transferability Settings from one handheld can be easily transferred to others, allowing you to use one handheld to setup one or more configurations, password protections, etc., and then configure all your other handhelds in an identical way simply by installing the configuration file into each of those handhelds.
Scan from within ScanConfig Allows you to test various configurations, or simply to determine the value and type of a particular barcode without using any other application.

Want to learn more about ScanConfig?

We've tried to keep this page simple, but the complete manual for ScanConfig is part of the download when you download the software (see below). Even if you don't have a Palm, there are plenty of screen shots, so you can see everything the software can do, and how easy it is to use.

Want to try ScanConfig yourself?

You can download ScanConfig and put it through its paces without a Serial Number (password). The handheld software is fully functional without a serial number, but when you HotSync the data, only the first five items in any data you collect will be transferred to the desktop, and in addition, the software will expire in 14 days. This should allow you to fully evaluate what ScanConfig can do for you and your business. Download now.

Want to learn more about PalmOS handhelds?

Our software runs on the Palm operating system (PalmOS). PalmOS is developed by PalmSource, and is licensed for use on handheld devices made by palmOne (including the Treo, Zire, and Tungsten lines), Handspring (now part of palmOne), Sony, Symbol (some models), Kyocera, Samsung, and others. A complete, current list of licensees, with links to their respective websites, can be found here.

ScanConfig is enhanced to take advantage of barcode-scanning capability, which means that if you have a PalmOS handheld equipped with a barcode scanner, the software will operate even more efficiently (although it definitely works without barcode scanning on "normal" PalmOS handhelds). There are a variety of options for barcode scanning using PalmOS handhelds; you can read all about them here. At this time, ScanConfig works only on units made by Symbol Technologies.
